gearing up for fall

After a busy spring in which we were rented for 6 consecutive weeks, we're gearing up for the fall. We already have 4 weeks tentatively booked (3 by SCAD students and 1 by a local group that does figure drawing), so we encourage students and other artists to get in touch soon.

Tuesday evening life drawing sessions continue through the summer. 6:30 to 9:00 p.m., $15 to draw. We've had a great mix so far of male and female models. Artists need to bring their own supplies, although we have a few chair and may have an extra easel or two. Please email billdawers@comcast.net for more information.

Tuesday Evening Life Drawing Sessions to resume

After two weeks off, we are set to resume Tuesday evening life drawing sessions at blankspace at 112 East 40th St. on Tuesday, March 24 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. On that night, we'll have an experienced male model, followed by a long pose with an experienced female model on 3/31, an extrememly dynamic male model on 4/7, and another male model on 4/14. We'll try to round out the month of April with female models.

Our first 6 weeks went VERY well, although we could use another couple of regular attendees to ensure our continued viability. After a slight adjustment in pricing terms, I'm allowing people to pay as they go, $15/night, but up-front payments would be welcome. Since we're paying models $20/hour, I need to average four paying attendees per evening to hit the break-even point.

So please spread the word to anyone who might be interested. Contact me via email with questions.

blankspace is offering figure drawing sessions on six Tuesday evenings in January and February 2009.

Our first weekly rental is to members of a woodblock printing class at SCAD, which will have an opening on Friday, Nov. 7 from 7 to 10 p.m. for their show process13 (that's to the 13th power). This coincides with Starland's First Friday (check out www.desotorow.org), so it should be a good night in the neighborhood.

If you have found this page, then you might already have heard of blankspace, a new gallery at 112 East 40th St.

I'm one of the partners in this venture. In addition to writing three freelance columns a week for the Savannah Morning News and serving as president of the Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home, I'm also an occasional painter and longtime art collector. The other principal organizer of blankspace is Scot Hinson, an artist and designer who has been prominent on Savannah's cultural scene since opening his shop Mode on Broughton Street back in the last century.

blankspace is available for rent by the week ($325). With 800 sf of floor space and more than 100 feet of white, well-lit wall space, it should be perfect for a variety of thesis shows and other exhibits.

When blankspace is not rented, Scot and I are hoping to mount a variety of solo and group shows showcasing art, furniture and design. Artists who do not want to rent the space but are interested in having us arrange a show for them are welcome to get in touch to discuss terms.

We are also weighing the possibility of offering some ongoing opportunities, such as a life drawing session one night a week.
